PM -INTREST ON SPECTRUM-AND CORPORATE

NEW DELHI: A Norwegian delegation led by its IT Minister Sigve Brekke has sought Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal’s help in protecting the country’s telecom sector interests in India, against the backdrop of the SC cancelling 122 licences allotted by former telecom minister A Raja. The Norway government has a stake in Telenor ASA, which entered into a joint venture with Unitech Wireless Ltd, which has been worst hit by the SC verdict. The 22 spectrum licences that were bagged by Unitech had to be surrendered after the court order.
Though the PMO termed the PM’s letter to the Attorney General G E Vahanvati seeking his opinion on the issue of filing a review petition as “nothing unusual”, what could be worrisome for its own officials is that Singh has asked the AG whether action needs to be initiated against anyone in his office. He has been asked to give a view on whether the government needs to formulate a new law or the existing structure can be allowed to determine pricing in future.
